As
announcement after announcement keep coming from the Kingdom of Japan Pro-Wrestling
offices, one of the most significant yet happened earlier today.
Returning
legend, and the J1-Rikidozan/Neo Japan Pro-Wrestling Heavyweight Champion of
record, Genji Yamato held a joint press conference today with KJPW President
Shigesato Ishiyama. Streamed live over KJPW's YouTube channel, it began with
both Yamato and Ishiyama sitting down, the famed Double Titles laying across
the table. Then, without a word of introduction, both Yamato and Ishiyama
appeared to be signing some sort of paperwork, with the two trading their
stacks, all without speaking, yet with smiles on their faces.
Afterwards,
two attorneys both looked over the paperwork, nodding with approval. Once that
was done, Yamato and Ishiyama shook hands, and sat down.
Ishiyama
then spoke words that will send reverberations throughout all of Pro-Wrestling:
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, and wrestling fans all over Japan, and
the world: With the signatures of myself, and Mr. Genji Yamato, I am proud to
announce that Kingdom of Japan Pro-Wrestling is now the LEGAL OWNER OF THE
J1-RIKIDOZAN AND NEO JAPAN PRO-WRESTLING HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
BELTS."
The
assembled press were first stunned, then applauding, before Yamato-san quieted
them down.
"This
is something that probably should have happened ages ago, however, the Double
Titles, which I was entrusted with following the closure of Neo Japan, and
which I used in my own Japan Puroresu Association promotion, was something I
did not want to let go of. However, as time has gone on, while I am still a
proud champion, despite not having defended these belts since 2005, in
Pro-Wrestling FURY against Tetsuhisa NAKAI... being the owner of these belts
has been a struggle, frankly, especially as they were inactive.
"These
titles MEAN something to the history of puroresu, and should have been fought
over all this time. When I approached Ishiyama-san about returning to
wrestling, at Kingdom of Japan, and agreed to defend these titles, he insisted
that KJPW be awarded custodianship of the belts. We had to agree exact terms,
but I was happy that it came to this. A burden from me has been lifted, and
even though I am still champion, I no longer am responsible for them as
custodian.
"I am
getting compensated for this, this is a purchase. So unlike what was said about
me on Riki Fudo's radio show by Ryo Inoue, I am not taking the money and
running. I am taking the money, and staying, and defending these titles."
The press
corps once again wished to speak, but Ishiyama quieted them again to make a
further statement that lead to another bombshell.
"Kingdom
of Japan's ownership of the Double Titles will begin officially on April 1, at
noon. In the meantime, as part of the agreement between Yamato and KJPW, it was
decided that titles of this magnitude and historical value needed an
administrator to oversee they are handled properly, and in the right way. After
negotiations, I am happy to announce we have our Double Titles Administrator.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you... HIROYOSHI TENZAKI!"
Gasps
emerged as another blast from the past emerged from behind a curtain. Dressed
in a black suit, with a black shirt and white tie, wearing sunglasses, hair
spiked, with a white goatee, the wrestler formerly known as "Ice
Cold" Hiroyoshi Tenzaki took a seat between Yamato and Ishiyama. Tenzaki
was once the top villain in Neo Japan Pro-Wrestling, however repeated neck
injuries forced Tenzaki to retire early. Now, Tenzaki is more known as a
television personality in Japan, as well as his charity work, which has seen
Tenzaki work with child victims of the various wars of the 21st Century.
"It is
an honor, and privilege, to work once more with Genji Yamato, and to be back
among my original love of wrestling. I, too, have been away for too long, and
will work diligently to fulfill my duties as Administrator of the
J1-Rikidozan/Neo Japan Pro-Wrestling heavyweight titles that I once held as a
competitor. It will be a pleasure to shake the hands of Kazuma Fujita, for the
very first time, as he gets in the ring on April 17. I look forward to this new
work, and wish every competitor that will come for these belts, all the best of
luck."
The press
were then finally allowed to ask questions, the first of which was
"Knowing the history between Tenzaki and Yamato, can Tenzaki be a fair
administrator?"
Yamato
defended his old rival, saying "Times change. I have known Tenzaki
socially for many years outside of the ring, and we were friends before we were
rivals in Neo Japan. I have no doubts in his abilities or fairness."
Tenzaki
countered with, "My days of competition are over. That is all."
Ishiyama
fielded the next question, asking about the previous titles in KJPW, the
Honored Emperor's Crown, and what their status was compared to the Double
Titles. "The HEC is still very much a part of our plans in Kingdom of
Japan Pro-Wrestling, and will never be a lesser title, nor will the Double
Titles be de-valued in any way as well. More information will come soon."
With that,
all three men stood up, shook hands with one another, and posed for press
photos over the Double Titles, which are now fully owned by Kingdom of Japan Pro-Wrestling.
